The Senate Rules Committee held a hearing on two new Smithsonian museums proposals: the American Women’s History Museum and the National Museum of the American Latino. Senators from both parties spoke in favor of the proposals, highlighting the need for the experiences of American women and Latinos to be included in its own museum. Among the witnesses testifying was Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie Bunch, who led the effort and was the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Actress and activist Eva Longoria also testified remotely, calling on Congress to “correct the record” on the Latino contribution in the United States and provide a more inclusive appreciation of their experience through the Smithsonian museums. close
