New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) held a news conference on the decision to close the city’s schools for in-person learning in the wake of a surge in coronavirus cases. The mayor said the decision was based on the city’s positivity rate hitting a 3 percent threshold, but that they hoped to get students back in the classroom as soon as possible. “Today is a tough day, but this is a temporary situation,” he said. “Our schools will be back and our school year will get better and better as we go along. And this disease will be beaten in the course of this school year.” The mayor said schools would remain closed at least through the Thanksgiving holiday and that the city was working to get electronic devices to students in the interim to complete their schoolwork. Mayor de Blasio was joined by the chancellor of New York City schools as well as a pair of medical advisers. close
