CIA Director Nominee William Burns Testifies at Confirmation Hearing

In his opening statement Mr. Burns said his top priorities, if confirmed, were “China, technology, people and partnerships.” He spoke about the threats posed by foreign states, calling China a “formidable authoritarian adversary” and warned not to underestimate the threat posed by Russia as a “declining power.” Mr. Burns discussed the importance of speaking truth to power and said providing unvarnished intelligence was key to making effective policy. Introducing Mr. Burns was former Secretary of State James Baker and former CIA Director and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
