The Washington Post hosted a virtual discussion on the impact of hip hop on culture. Joining the conversation were Kevin Young, the National Museum of African American History and Culture director, and Dwandalyn Reece, the museum’s associate director for curatorial affairs. They discussed the cultural and political ties hip hop has to history, and its impact on politics and social movements. Much of the conversation focused on the Smithsonian’s new project, “The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip Hop and Rap,” which documents over 40 years of hip hop through music, photos, and stories. close
