The resolution came as the United States brought its withdrawal efforts to a conclusion after 20 years of a military presence in the country. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the U.S. had evacuated 122,000 American citizens, foreign nationals and at-risk Afghans from the country since the end of July. The 15-member council adopted the resolution with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions.
