A woman who was held in immigration detention for six months in 2020 at a Georgia federal facility gave emotional testimony at a Senate Homeland Security subcommittee hearing. She detailed and accused a doctor of performing gynecological procedures against her will. Her complaint and others along with a 2020 whistleblower account sparked lawsuits and several investigations, including one by a congressional subcommittee. The Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations conducted an 18-month-long review. In a more than 100-page report subcommittee members found that women detainees “appear to have been subjected to excessive, invasive and often unnecessary gynecologic procedures.” Other witnesses included two physicians who independently reviewed patients' charts and records. close
