The House approved a bill that would require annual audits of the president’s tax returns. The legislation, titled the Presidential Tax Filings and Audit Transparency Act, passed with 222 to 201 votes and had support from five Republicans: Representatives Adam Kinzinger (IL), Fred Upton (MI), Liz Cheney (WY), John Katko (NY), and Tom Rice (SC). Lawmakers also considered several suspension bills. House members were in session on this day as they waited to begin work on a $1.7 trillion spending package to fund the federal government through the end of the current fiscal year on September 30, 2023. The Senate passed the legislation on this day as government funding was set to expire at the end of the day on December 23. The House passed it the following day, on December 22. close
