Following oral argument in Hagen v. Utah, counselor for the respondent Jan Graham, Senator Robert Bennett (R-UT), and Representative Karen Shepherd (D-UT) spoke with reporters. The case concerned whether Utah or the regional Indian tribe had primary authority over reservation land, as well as the right to determine the use of that land. Ms. Graham stated that the demographics of the area was important in determining the use of the land and that the state of Utah should have primary authority. Senator Bennett declined to take a position and said that both sides presented well. Representative Shepherd stated that the process was interesting to watch. close
