Amid the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia making landfall in Florida and surrounding states, President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas delivered remarks at Federal Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Washington, D.C. President Biden said he had spoken again to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and other governors, saying he approved their disaster and emergency declarations. Also, the president thanked FEMA employees for their work and said he would visit Florida on Saturday morning. Finally, reporters asked about a possible government shutdown amid a September 30 deadline, which Mr. Biden said would be a “serious, serious problem” if it actually happened, as well as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who appeared to have health issues during recent news conferences. President Biden said he had spoken to Senator McConnell over the phone and that he was confident the senator would be fine. close
