The House gaveled in briefly for opening procedures and then recessed, subject to the call of the chair. Members did not vote on a new speaker to replace former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who was ousted on October 3 when he failed to get enough votes to retain his leadership position. Eight Republicans and all Democrats voted in favor of the motion to vacate the chair, the first time in House history members had voted to remove the speaker. Because there was not a speaker, the House could not conduct any legislative business. Off the floor, Republican members struggled to agree on a candidate who could garner the 217 votes needed to become speaker. close
