Amid the Russia-Ukraine War, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Jim Risch (R-ID) discussed proposed legislation that repurposes frozen Russian assets for Ukraine’s reconstruction. He said this bill was needed in order to hold Russia accountable for its invasion of Ukraine and could deter China from invading Taiwan. He also claimed it would be legal under international law. At the time of this event, the U.S. and its allies had frozen more than $300 billion in Russian assets in response to the invasion, and Ukraine’s reconstruction costs were estimated to be over $400 billion. After Sen. Risch’s remarks, foreign policy professionals also discussed the legislation. This event was hosted by the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC. close
