Athens, Ohio, Mayor Steve Patterson (D) and the CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc., an economic development agency, were among those testifying at a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing on renewing the National Flood Insurance Program. Witnesses recommended prioritizing affordability and sustainability of flood insurance and discussed ways to mitigate flood risks in coastal and inland communities. When Ranking Member Tim Scott (R-SC) asked about options for homeowners who do not have coverage, Daniel Kaniewski, former FEMA acting deputy administrator said, “far too many Americans believe that flood insurance is included in homeownership policies. It is not.” The National Flood authorization was set to expire on March 8, 2024. close
