Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announced that the central bank was keeping its interest rate policy unchanged at present. He said the current rate of 5.25% to 5.5% was likely at its peak and that it would probably be lowered later in 2024 if the economy continued to evolve as expected. Although he celebrated the overall state of the U.S. economy, Mr. Powell cautioned that the economic outlook remained uncertain as the Fed tried to lower inflation to a target rate of 2%. The Federal Open Market Committee, the body that decides interest rate policy, meets next on March 19-20. close
