Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis defended her handling of the 2020 election inference case during remarks at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta, as part of the congregation’s Martin Luther King, Jr., observance day service. She spoke for the first time publicly about allegations made in a court filing by the former president’s legal team, accusing her of an improper relationship with the special prosecutor overseeing the case. She defended the attorney, Nathan Wade, who is Black, as a legal “superstar,” without using his name, and she noted the other two special prosecutors are white. “They only attacked one,” she told the congregation. The defense followed up with another court motion to dismiss the case, arguing the district attorney’s remarks were meant to “foment racial animus.” Two weeks after the speech to the Big Bethel congregation, Ms. Willis, in a court filing, acknowledged a personal relationship with Mr. Wade, but said the defense had not proven a conflict of interest. close
