President Biden and Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, also referred to as the taoiseach, gave remarks at a White House St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Both leaders spoke about Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as the need to increase humanitarian aid in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas conflict there. Mr. Varadkar talked about the toll on civilians in Gaza, saying that the Irish people are “deeply troubled about the catastrophe that’s unfolding.” He likened the Palestinians' history to that of the Irish, “one of displacement, of dispossession, national identity being denied, forced emigration, discrimination, and now hunger.” close
