Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, Police Chief Pamela Smith, and Executive Assistant Police Chief Jeffery Carroll held a press conference on the city’s response to pro-Palestinian protests amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. It came after 33 people were arrested at George Washington University as police cleared out a protest encampment. The officials discussed reports of antisemitism and unlawful activity on the university’s campus, counter-protesters, and the potential for additional protests. Mayor Bowser and Police Chief Smith were scheduled to appear before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability to discuss the matter. However, the hearing was canceled following the arrests. close
