Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) discussed his “Disagree Better” initiative, his plan as chair of the National Governors Association to champion political civility and mitigate polarization in the nation. He shared his thoughts on how the U.S. became so polarized, mentioning loss of local community and loneliness combined with the effects of mass media on tribalism. The governor then shared his advice on how polarization can be mitigated, such as having face-to-face conversations with others who hold different views, not being defined solely by politics, and getting involved in acts of service. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute’s Center on Civility and Democracy hosted this event in Washington, DC. close
