Foreign Minister Kinkel and members of the Bundestag debated the expansion of the European union. Germany has led the drive to expand union, first to Austria, and then to Nordic countries and then to eastern countries such as Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is expected that when Germany assumes the rotating presidency of the European Union in July, its top priority will be securing membership for these states. close
