Current news events and political issues were examined through reviews of the morning newspapers; interviews with journalists, newsmakers and legislators; and viewer telephone calls, faxes and electronic mail. In the first segment Ann Cooper of National Public Radio, from Johannesburg, talked about the fifth anniversary of South African President Nelson Mandela’s release after 18 years in prison. In the federal budget segment Peter Copeland of Scripps Howard talked about Defense Department budget proposals. In the newspaper roundtable Tom Rosenstiel of Newsweek and Josette Shiner of the Washington Times spoke about former Vice President Quayle’s withdrawal from the Republican presidential race and other topics. James Atlas talked about his New York Times Magazine cover story titled, “Look Who’s the Opinion Elite Now,” which examined young conservative thinkers. Senator David Pryor (D-AR) talked about the career of former Senator William Fulbright who died yesterday. close
