White House Press Secretary Michael McCurry announced that a provision of the 1994 Crime Bill became effective that day, which required the Bureau of Prisons to notify local law enforcement officials when a prisoner who had been convicted of a violent crime or drug trafficking was freed on supervised release. McCurry said that Surgeon General nominee Foster met today with students and residents at Children’s Hospital, which included a large number of his own former students who came in for the event.
