At a ceremony at Independence Hall, people gathered to celebrate Independence Day with music by the Marty Portnoy Orchestra and the Philadelphia Boys Choir. Participants heard patriotic songs and portions of the Declaration of Independence. The Philadelphia Liberty Medal was presented in absentia to King Hussein and to Shimon Peres. In their remarks, the Jordanian ambassador and Mr. Peres paid tribute to each other and to the U.S. for the struggle to create a lasting peace in the Middle East. The ceremony concluded with Muslim and Hebrew prayers. close
