A discussion by the Permanent Council of the OAS on the situation in Panama as requested by the delegation from Venezuela. A draft resolution stated that a meeting of the UN Security Council was needed to address the crisis there. Member Ministers then related their concerns. Costa Rica stressed a return to democracy in Panama, noting the election fraud and suppression, and requested a peaceful resolution to the situation. They were joined by the Ministers from Honduras, Brazil, Guatemala, Chile, Jamaica, Ecuador, Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Mexico. El Salvador thought that only the Foreign Ministers should be in discussion and not delegates of the OAS. U.S. Ambassador William Pryce read a statement outlining the support for the OAS effort. The acting representative of Panama criticized the actions of the U.S. in the crisis and its continuing interference to Panama’s affairs. close
