Beginning about 5:05 p.m., Senator Smith voiced his opposition to the Daschle amendment to S.6, a bill to ban a certain type of abortion procedure known to many as “partial-birth” abortion. His amendment would ban all abortions performed on fetuses which could be viable outside the womb except in cases where the mother’s death or “greivous injury” is at risk in consultation with her physician. Senator Smith urged senators that they must protect innocent children who have no others to protect them. The Senate later rejected the amendment by a 64 to 36 vote. close
