Committee members discussed the progress of the investigation into campaign fund raising abuses during the 1996 campaign. Much of the debate focused on the Democratic request for more subpoenas, stronger enforcement of existing subpoenas for Republican campaign officials and documents, and the Republican request for immunity for 18 witnesses, including 15 Buddhists from a California temple. The Democratic members blocked the Republican effort to grant this immunity and stressed that they would support this immunity if the Republicans will support their requests for more subpoenas of Republicans. Republicans stressed that the committee will investigate allegations of foreign influences on U.S. elections despite Democratic efforts to block them. close
