Justice Clarence Thomas spoke to the annual meeting of the Supreme Court Historical Society. In his remarks, he talked about the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson case, in which the court created the notion of “separate but equal” facilities for blacks and whites. Justice Thomas noted that the anniversary of the decision has passed without much notice, just as it had when the original decision was handed down when there was “virtually no editorial comment aside from the Negro press.” He detailed the particulars of the case and the reasoning behind the Court’s decision. close
