WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Cresent Hardy (NV-4) offered an amendment to H.R. 2822, requiring transparency and local input for national monuments by prohibiting public land management agencies in the bill from making declarations under the Antiquities Act in counties where there is significant local opposition. The amendment does not defund the Antiquities Act in its entirety. Rather, it is a targeted approach that simply prevents proposed monument designations from proceeding in those jurisdictions where local stakeholders have expressed opposition and their desire for increased intergovernmental collaboration. Congressman Hardy was joined on the floor by U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-4), and U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop (UT-1), chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, each of whom spoke in support of the amendment. close
