    Senate Hearing on COVID-19 Impact on College Students

    The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on colleges and universities. Several college and university presidents testified about their plans to reopen in the fall and the challenges they face. They discussed the importance of the financial assistance provided by the CARES Act, and stressed the importance of addressing the hardships that minority students and those of lower socio-economic status are facing due to the coronavirus pandemic including access to food, housing and internet access. Also testifying was American Public Health Association Executive Director Georges Benjamin, who stressed that college campuses will have cases of COVID-19 in the fall and expressed how important it would be to have a plan to respond.

    Purdue University President Mitch Daniels on Higher Education

    Purdue University President Mitch Daniels said on campus, value “is the most common equation of life … meaning quality over price,” and that Purdue University has “taken pains to keep the cost of a Purdue education within reach.” He added that the cost of tuition at Purdue had remained unchanged during his 10-year tenure as president. His remarks came during an American Enterprise Institute conversation on higher education=. Several topics were discussed during the conversation, including college affordability; STEM education, i.e., science, technology, engineering, and math); enrollment levels; higher education alternatives; and the Biden administration’s student loan debt relief plan, which Mr. Daniels does not support. Mr. Daniels, a former Republican governor of Indiana, announced he would step down as president of Purdue at the end of 2022.

    From the origins of the page system in 1774 through the period in the 1940s when Congress demonstrated an indifference towards the needs of providing the boys with supervised living arrangements, to modern scandals, congressional pages have had a storied history. Darryl Gonzalez provides an account in a new book about the history of the congressional pages, both boys and girls, who have served Congress for more than 200 years. He showed slides during his presentation and afterward responded to questions from members of the audience.
    This presentation in Ketcham Hall of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building in Washington, D.C., on March 9, 2011, was part of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society’s noon Brown Bag Book-Signing Lecture Series.
