Attorney General Merrick Garland testified on oversight of the Justice Department before the House Judiciary Committee. Several Republican members grilled Attorney General Garland on whether or not he has interfered in U.S. Attorney David Weiss' investigation into President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. Mr. Garland repeatedly rejected these accusations and said, “I am not the president’s lawyer.” The attorney general also emphasized he has continued to support Attorney Weiss--who was originally appointed by former President Trump--including appointing him as special counsel upon Mr. Weiss' request. Several Democratic members criticized Republicans' handling of the hearing and, along with Republican Rep. Ken Buck (CO), defended Mr. Garland’s record. Other topics included the fentanyl crisis, gun violence, and other allegations pertaining to the Biden family.

Former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield joined public health and science professionals and advocates to testify on the origins of COVID-19 before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. Subcommittee members and witnesses alike discussed the theories around the origins of the coronavirus, debating whether the virus was the result of a lab leak in Wuhan, China, or animal-to-animal transmission. Among the topics addressed were China’s accountability and lack of transparency, the politicization of the pandemic, the impact of misinformation, and the use of gain of function research.

The Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony from Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh and Professor Christine Blasey Ford about her allegations that Judge Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her while the two were teenagers.
