President Obama spoke to reporters in a news conference from the G-20 summit in Antalya, Turkey. He talked about the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, and defended the U.S. strategy in combating ISIS.* He ruled out sending U.S. troops on the ground and told reporters that he would not make decisions to make the U.S. “look tough.” The president also said he did not receive any specific intelligence or warning in advance of the Paris attacks that the U.S. could have provided to the French government.

Professor Woody Holton discussed Thomas Jefferson’s motivations for writing the Declaration of Independence and the groups that influenced him. He also responded to questions from members of the audience.

Prior to confirmation hearings for Judge John Roberts, a compilation of Senate Judiciary hearings on the nomination of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was shown. Justice Ginsburg’s testimony took place from July 20-23 of 1993. Portions were drawn from hearings on July 20, 1993 and July 22, 1993.
Justice Ginsburg responded to questions from committee members about her views regarding such topics as the Constitution, Madison lecture speech, equal protection, gender discrimination, Dred Scott, her personal beliefs, race, personal life experiences with gender discrimination, death penalty, Roe vs. Wade, and the correlation between slavery and abortion.
President Clinton nominated Justice Ginsburg to the Supreme Court on June 14, 1993. The Senate confirmed her nomination on August 3, 1993 with a vote of 96 in favor, 3 opposed. Justice Ginsburg was named to succeed retired Supreme Court Justice Byron White.

Panelists talked about the religious basis of Islamist terrorism and how or whether it should factor into a comprehensive US strategy to defeat extremists. The topic of the first panel, “The Challenge of Extremism,” was the role Islam plays in inciting terrorism and if the Koran is being manipulated by extremists. In the second panel, “Options for the Islamic World and the United States,” panelists discussed what the U.S. role and strategy should be to counter Islamic terrorism.


“Islamic Extremism, Reformism, and the War on Terror” was an event at the American Enterprise Institute.

Representatives from the State Department and CIA provided updates on pending committee requests for documents and interviews at the third public hearing of the House Select Committee on Benghazi. The committee was formed to examine the events surrounding the September 11, 2012, terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, which left four people dead, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Witnesses testified at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on the sale of Department of Defense weapons and equipment to state and local police forces.

Scott Gottlieb talked about the methods used by pharmaceutical companies when determining drug prices, as well as the Food and Drug Administration’s role in the drug market.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest briefed reporters and responded to questions on a variety of topics, including President Obama’s comments on China, the security situation in Syria, and the president’s invitation to Ahmed Mohamed to visit the White House. Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old high school student in Irving, Texas, was arrested after he brought the digital clock he had built to school to show to a teacher.

General Lloyd Austin, the head of U.S. Central Command, testified testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on combating ISIS.* General Lloyd vowed to take appropriate action regarding a Defense Department inspector general investigation involving Central Command possibly skewing intelligence about ISIS. In addition, he announced that only four or five U.S.-trained Syrian fighters remained on the battlefield against ISIS and that the U.S. would not reach its goal of training 5,000 fighters in the near term. Defense Under Secretary for Policy Christine Wormuth also provided testimony. Committee Chair Senator John McCain (R-AZ) heavily criticized the U.S. strategy in Iraq and Syria, calling it a failure.
