The committee began a series of hearings to consider the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit. Mr. Thomas held the chair of the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission longer than any other person and was previously the Assistant Attorney General of Missouri. Opponents to Mr. Thomas' nomination claim he did not vigorously enforce anti-discrimination employment regulations during his tenure at the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. Clarence Thomas’s nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals was confirmed. On July 1, 1991, Judge Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court seat vacated by the retirement of Supreme Court Judge Thurgood Marshall. close
