Opponents to Mr. Thomas' nomination claim he did not vigorously enforce anti-discrimination employment regulations during his tenure at the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. Clarence Thomas’s nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals was confirmed. On July 1, 1991, Judge Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court seat vacated by the retirement of Supreme Court Judge Thurgood Marshall.
