The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing on states' efforts to combat the opioid epidemic. Public health officials from Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia testified on steps their states have taken in the battle against opioid abuse and what further assistance the federal government can provide. Witnesses talked about treatment, prevention and recovery efforts, federal grants, health insurance coverage, prescription drug take backs, needle exchanges, behavioral counseling, housing issues, workforce development, and access to naloxone, a drug that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. close
