National Security Council Communications Coordinator John Kirby said there is no reason for China “to react harshly or overreact in any way” when asked about Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s “transit stop” in the U.S. on her way to Central America. Addressing the press during a daily briefing at the White House, he said the “transit is consistent with our longstanding unofficial relationship with Taiwan,” and China “should not use this transit as a pretext to step up any aggressive activity around the Taiwan Strait.” Mr. Kirby, along with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, took questions on a variety of topics, including the recent shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee; gun control legislation; the migrant center fire in Mexico near the U.S. southern border; and the Summit for Democracy. close
