Representative Newt Gingrich (R-GA) was officially escorted to the speaker’s chair after winning the election to be speaker of the House of Representatives. Representative Gephardt congratulated Representative Gingrich and the Republicans, and expressed his hopes for bipartisan cooperation in the 104th Congress. After being sworn in and receiving the gavel, Representative Gingrich spoke about some of his political heroes, such as Henry Clay, and also expressed his hopes for bipartisanship and invigorating influence from the numerous freshmen representatives. close
