The committee heard testimony from the Director of Central Intelligence on the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East. He emphasized that Iraq is militarily weaker but politically stronger after the attack because of the lack of support of the U.S. strike by several members of the Gulf War coalition and an increased Arab sentiment for Iraqi hardships. He also stated that he has asked for an independent investigation into allegations that the CIA sold drugs to U.S. citizens in the early 1980s to help finance covert operations against the Sandinista regime in Nicaragua. close
