Vice President Al Gore, administration officials, including Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo, and others held a news conference to announce the awarding of $270 million in crime prevention grants for public housing in 13 cities. This is an expansion of a two-year old initiative to decrease crime in public housing which originally targeted six cities and includes both increased law enforcement and alternative activity programs to reduce drug crimes in public housing. They stressed that this programs will continue to help make public housing safer for poor children and their families. close
