In their first markup session on this tax legislation, House Ways and Means Committte members progressed through tax legislation line by line which is designed to cut taxes by $85 billion over the next five years as part of the 1998 budget resolution. In this portion, members debated language in Title One of the bill. Several Democratic amendments were defeated, including a series to expand eligibility for the child tax credit. close
