Michael Barone talked about his book The New Americans: How the Melting Pot Can Work Again, published by Regnery Publishing. Mr. Barone said he was inspired to write the book because he often heard an idea he disagreed with: that the U.S. is becoming a truly multicultural nation for the first time, and that we should therefore respond differently than we have before. He theorizes that, while the places where immigrants are coming from are different, today’s minority groups mirror immigrant groups of 100 years ago; for instance, blacks resemble the Irish, Latinos resemble Italians, and Asians resemble the Jews. He also talked about the successes and failures of blacks, Latinos and Asians assimilating into American society today. He took questions from the audience after his prepared remarks. close
