Mr. Chaffin talked about his biography, Pathfinder: John Charles Fremont and the Course of American Empire, published by Hill and Wang. American explorer John Charles Fremont (1813-1890) was nicknamed “the Pathfinder” in acknowledgment of his expeditions to map the American West between 1838 and 1854. Mr. Chaffin described the life of the 19th century explorer, including his varied experiences as cartographer, entrepreneur, abolitionist, Civil War general and two-time Republican presidential candidate. He also analyzed Fremont’s role in U.S. expansion and settlement of the West. Mr. Chaffin answered questions from audience members after his presentation. close
