Ms. Denton talked about her book American Massacre: The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, September 1857, published by Knopf. The book reopens the controversy over an attack in Utah on Arkansas pioneers in which 140 men, women, and children were slaughtered. She said that Mormon Church leaders blamed the attack on a group of local Indians, and that John Lee, a Mormon, was eventually executed for his role in the massacre. Ms. Denton contended that the ultimate responsibility rested with Mormon Church leader Brigham Young. Ms. Denton read from her book, explained why she decided to write it, and answered questions from the audience. close
