America and the Courts features two U.S. Supreme Court cases: Medical Marijuana: Ashcroft v. Raich; and Title IX Retaliation Lawsuit: Jackson v. Birmingham Board of Education.
On Monday, November 29, 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument in Ashcroft v. Raich, which questions whether the federal government can control the use of marijuana for medical purposes even in states where such use is legal. First is featured a short portion of Washington Journal from Monday, in which guests present the two sides of the case. Robert Kampia is the executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project and David Evans is the founder and executive director of Drug Free Schools Coalition. Then are heard some of the comments made outside the Supreme Court by the participants, who spoke to reporters just after oral argument. Featured speakers include co-plaintiffs Angel Raich and Diane Monson, who use marijuana for health reasons.
