She spoke about the records of the Freedman’s Bureau, a federal agency created in 1865 to aid refugees from the Civil War, especially newly freed slaves. Ms. Weidman discussed the establishment of schools and teachers' monthly school reports. She also talked about the opposition in the South towards schools for children of former slaves. close
