Speaker of the House Hastert and Representative Shimkus read statements about Representative Mark Foley’s resignation and their request for an investigation into improper and possibly illegal conduct by Representative Foley in his improper communications with a former House page. In their statements they denied knowledge of the content of the communications. They also said that they would act aggressively to respond to the scandal and would review safeguards to protect congressional pages. They did not answer questions from the media. close
