President George H.W. Bush, briefed reporters on his phone call with Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev which he had just concluded. President Gorbachev planned to return from where he had been held in the Crimea to Moscow in a short time following the collapse of a coup by communist hard-liners in the Soviet Union. President Bush remarked Gorbachev reported the situation in the Soviet Union as under control, and said President Gorbachev sounded buoyant following the failure of the coup.
