President Bush responded to reporters' questions in a news conference on the South Lawn of the White House held just before his departure for Rome to attend a NATO meeting. He responded to questions on the outcome of Tuesday’s elections and to Democratic criticisms of his attention to foreign affairs. He emphasized the Republican victories in Mississippi, New Jersey and Virginia, while congratulating Dick Thornburgh, the former U.S. Attorney General who lost his bid for a Senate seat from Pennsylvania. He also sounded optimism on the economic recovery and showed concern for the Americans affected by the recession. close
