Prisoner of the State Panelists talked about the book Prisoner of the State: The Secret Journal of Premier Zhao Ziyang. Former Chinese Communist Party premier and secretary general Zhao Ziyang was ousted from the Communist Party and put under house arrest after he spoke out in favor of the Tiananmen Square protesters in 1989. His memoir, smuggled out of China, was published four years after he died in 2005. It offers new insights into the 1989 student movement that led to Zhao’s dismissal, the role he played in China’s economic reform, and the schisms within the Communist Party under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping. Participants included two of the book’s editors, Adi Ignatius and Bao Pu, and former U.S. Ambassador to China Winston Lord. Orville Schell moderated.

Bao Pu is a political commentator, human rights activist, and publisher of New Century Press in Hong Kong. Adi Ignatius covered China and Zhao Ziyang for the Wall Street Journal. close
