On the 50th anniversary of the April 17, 1961, Bay of Pigs Invasion historians were joined by Alfredo Duran, a Cuban exile who participated in the assault, in examining the steps leading to the failed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro’s government and the invasion’s legacy for Kennedy’s presidency. Lingering invasion myths were discussed as well as the larger context of U.S. and Soviet Union relations. Adriana Bosch, Cuban-born writer and director of the PBS “American Experience” documentary Fidel Castro, moderated. The panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience.

This program was a Kennedy Library Forum. At the beginning of the program Mr. Putnam demonstrated the library’s new Website, focusing on the Bay of Pigs material there. close
