On May 14, 1607, 104 English settlers landed at Jamestown Island, Virginia, to establish a colony for the Virginia Company. Thought to be lost to history forever under the James River, the original fort was unearthed in 1994 by the Jamestown Rediscovery Archaeological Project.

Beverly Straube gave a tour of the archaeological collection and spoke about what it reveals about the everyday life of the 1607 settlers. She also talked about the various Jamestown locations and organizations and how the sites are managed and studied. She talked about the various museums and the visitor experience, including the behind-the-scenes “Curator’s Tour” that is available. Video was shown of William Kelso responding to questions as he led an “In the Trenches Tour” of the digging sites. Don Warmke talked about his usual routine of archaeology and conserving as well as one of his most exciting finds. Merry Outlaw showed how artifacts are cleaned, sorted, and stored. close
