On November 29, 1994, the end of an era was marked as Democratic House Speaker Tom Foley (WA) and Minority Leader Bob Michel (IL) saluted each other and said farewell to their colleagues. Speaker Foley temporarily handed the gavel and the chair to Minority Leader Michel. Representative Foley was defeated in his bid for re-election and Representative Michel was retiring after serving 38 years in the minority, 14 as leader. close
