Former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey talked about the latest developments in Iraq. Topics included U.S. policy toward Iraq over the preceding decade, the history of the region, and Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Among his comments he predicted that Iraq could become three separate entities: an official Shia-dominated state, ISIS* state, and a Kurdish state. He said that President Obama did not err in pulling out of Iraq and that President George W. Bush was in fact the one who signed the agreement for the U.S. to leave by 2011, but he also said that President Obama should have engaged with the Syrian opposition and taken action when ISIS took over Fallujah in December 2013.

C-SPAN Radio’s Nancy Calo read news headlines at the conclusion of the program.

* The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), or DAISH/DAESH in Arabic is a militant group that has called itself the Islamic State. close
