Election Security Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson testified in a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing about election security. They talked about the work of the department over the last two years in gauging, reacting and responding to attempts mostly from Russia to threaten the U.S. election process and sow public discord related to the systems, information and leadership at all levels. They were followed by a panel of state election officials, the Homeland Security assistant secretary for cybersecurity, and a former Defense Department official who further discussed the challenges of securing the nation’s election infrastructure as well as the cooperation and coordination between state and federal officials. close
